An interesting insight: Whom does Christ rebuke? Not the Roman tyrants, nor the Greek purveyors of pornographic displays and sacrifice to demons. No, Christ rebukes the religious leaders within the covenant people of God, who pervert the message of repentance into license and self-aggrandizement.
Whom do the Apostles rebuke and contend with? Not the evil empire that persecutes and murders them; not the taxes or theaters or military authorities under which they live; not the laws that permit slavery, prostitution, and death to unwanted children. No, the Apostles rebuke Christians who mix the Gospel of Christ with the world’s moralism and try to commune at the altar of God and of demons.
Cultures are things that happen outside the Church. “What have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth” (1 Cor 5;12-13).
