Are we winning?

“No matter how hot your anger is, it cannot cook yams” — Nigerian Proverb

A friend wrote that he realized he was so intent on fighting, refuting, and ridiculing the influences that are ruining America, that he was failing to be intentional about doing the things that he meant to defend: Honoring his wife in purity and laying down his life for her; making peace between those who are at odds; personally building the foundation of his neighborhood by communicating with his neighbors and helping meet their needs; learning and passing on to his children the literature and lore and music and virtues of his culture. He said that he felt he had failed his children by not living this life (the normal Christian life) in front of them so that they would know how to be when they grow up. If we call ourselves Christians but we prioritize “winning” over doing the Beatitudes, then in what way are we Christian?

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul?” — Matthew 16:26
