This film from director David Lowery and starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, and Joel Edgerton, is set to be shown in theaters beginning this July 30.
The studio, A24, writes:
An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.
Meanwhile, in happy providence:
Last week I received a wonderful blessing: Boxes of books I left behind when I left the country many years ago. I had forgotten many of these old friends. But I remembered and missed this midcentury original-language edition of Sir Gawain, heavily annotated throughout by a student in the 1960s. I knew I might one day find another used copy of this edition online, but the handwritten margin notes are irreplaceable. (The accompanying Ballantine edition of Tolkien’s translation is icing on the cake!)
I was planning to reread Sir Gawain this summer. I’ll definitely do so in preparation to watch this film adaptation. Time to brush up on Middle English!
