This is the Wikipedia of the 10th century! Emperor Constantine VII compiled this survey of politics and peoples as a manual to equip his son Romanos II to rule the empire and treat with its neighbors. Byzantinophiles, you need this book :-) No dust jacket, inscription inside the front cover, but otherwise very clean and crisp.

An overview of the state of the Church before the Norman conquest. Addresses the political and ecclesiastical complications that Germanic property laws and private chapel ownership imposed on the clergy of the period. The “Elf charms” in the title are a fascinating example of Churching some existing traditions. Where is the division between “magic” and sacramental blessing? Fascinating food for thought. |The Works of Philo
Philo was a contemporary of Christ and of St Paul. He reflects the Hellenist school of Bible interpretation that became dominant in Alexandrian Christianity, and is himself a fellow heir with Paul of a number of themes and arguments; this makes his writing an interesting Hellenist Jewish comparison to Paul, who applied the Christian revelation to these topics. Also, while the Christian dogma of the Logos owes much to the pre-Christian Aramaic Memra, Philo’s Logos teaching provides a snapshot of how Alexandrian audiences (Jewish and Gentile) received Christian preaching on thw topic.
Both cults and popular Christian groups make unfounded assertions about the worship and mindset of Second Temple Judaism. The Mishnah, compiled in the 1st and 2nd centuries, provides an inside view of daily life, debated topics, and the practical realities of the Temple as Christ and the Apostles encountered it.
