Nature by Numbers

When an artist commits to a particular art form, he chooses to work within its constraints. In forms like haiku or black-and-white photography, it can be surprising how the artist’s creativity and skill shine especially because of their chosen constraint.

Mathematics gives us a glimpse at the constraints God has imposed to order the universe. Constraints that continue to appear at every scale we can observe – and which incidentally produce striking beauty. When you see the math underlying nature, it’s like looking in God’s notebooks.

In Nature by Numbers, filmmaker Cristóbal Vila presents a series of animations illustrating mathematic principles, beginning with a breathtaking animation of the Fibonacci sequence. Then on to the Golden and Angle Ratios, the Delaunay Triangulation and Voronoi Tessellations.
