Madness

Mór báis mor baile
mór coll ceille mor mire
olais airchenn teicht dó ecaib
beith fo étoil maíc maire

’Tis frenzy blind,
’Tis witlessness, ’tis madness wild
– Since still to deathward all life tends –
To be unfriends with Mary’s child.

— Irish note in the margin of the 9th-century New Testament called the Codex Boernerianus.

Author: Father Silouan Thompson

  1. The first line of the margin note is another verse, perhaps by a disappointed pilgrim:

    To go to Rome:
    much labour, little profit.
The King you seek here you will not find
Unless you bring Him with you.
